Importance of Athletic Goal-setting

MAY 30, 2021  |  BY MICHELE RICHARDSON

If an athlete fails to plan, they plan to fail. That is why athletic goal setting is so important for individuals playing sports. Setting goals is not only important to achieve optimal performance, but it is a skill that teaches athletes how to manage their preparation for an event.

Sports experts state individuals who complete athletic goal setting improve at a quicker rate than those who don’t achieve goals. Too often, athletes unskilled at goal setting will achieve one long-term goal. However, making a long-term goal cannot only be unachievable, it can prevent athletes from measuring their performance over time. In fact, coaches and sports science professionals see long-term goals as a way for athletes to get discouraged when attempting to achieve their final aim.

Athletic goal setting: Why make goals?

The idea behind goal setting is to make measurable goals that will challenge an athlete. Each goal is increasingly more difficult, yet each should be achievable as the athlete progresses. An athlete should have personal goals that are appropriate for their level and ability. These will help an individual grow as an athlete. If done correctly over time, an individual can be hitting the right form and fitness for a sports event or season.

Athletic goal setting: What will an athlete achieve?

Goal setting allows an athlete to focus their attention on a task. A goal that builds up to the next task puts a linear path in front of the athlete and allows them to focus on one item before moving to the next. Each task gives the athlete purpose and all of their energy is put into completing the task. An athlete that has specific tasks outlined during a practice or training session cannot only learn more, but they can be far more invested. A goal gives an athlete a target to build to. Each target leads to a larger target until they get to an end result.

Athletic goal setting: What type of goals can be set?

There are different ways to set athletic goals. Some coaches and athletes will make performance goals. These are goals that help an athlete build up to a competition over time. Perhaps an athlete needs to improve their cycling to meet the required time to qualify for an event. An outcome goal is different than a performance goal. This allows a person to set a goal for their play in a game or match. For example, winning an event or scoring a specific number of points in a basketball game are outcome goals. Both types of goals are important and can help athletes improve in the long-term.

Athletic goal setting: Checklist for setting goals

Goal-setting experts have outlined ways for athletes to achieve their goals. The following checklist is one method that has been devised.

  • Can it be attained? Athletes should outline the goal, time, and whether it can be attainted realistically.
  • Make the right types of goals: long-term, yearly, performance, outcome, and preparation goals are all things to consider.
  • Make goals public: Athletes should share their goals as they can be held to them.
  • Review goals often, evaluate the progress, and revise them if the need arises.

Athletes can achieve results and improve better by setting goals. It is a great way to grow and increase athletic ability and all modern athletes should be doing it.
